A fall arrest device is a self-locking safety mechanisms designed to stop (arrest) a person’s fall when working at height.

They are classified into three main types according to their function and mobility: Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3.

  • Type 1 Fall Arrest Devices are engineered for utmost safety, designed to be attached to a rope, rail, or anchorage line.
  • Type 2 Fall Arrest Devices, commonly referred to as Self-Retracting Lifelines (SRL), Personal Fall Limiters (PFL), or Inertia Reels, are designed for dynamic movement and safety.
  • Type 3 Fall Arrest Device is an inertia reel with the inclusion of a retrieval function. These are ideal for use in confined space access and rescue.
